As I am writing this blog, I am about to finish my 21st year as Head of School of The Sagemont School in Weston, Florida. During these two decades of leadership, I have seen it all. When I started my career, the rage in education was the whole language versus phonics debate. Today it is common core. When we opened Sagemont in 1996, school technology was comprised of a large computer lab. Technology has evolved over the years from the lab, to wired classrooms, to 1-to-1 laptop programs, and finally to 1-to-1 tablet programs. The college counseling process has also changed tremendously over the years. College acceptance is significantly more competitive and challenging for our students than it was 21 years ago. I have had the privilege of leading my school during all of these dramatic changes in education.
I still doubt I have answered the question on why you should choose me to be your private school consultant. There are many private school heads around the country who have 20+ years of experience and war stories to share. My story is unique for a number of reasons. I am one of the few private school heads who opened their own private school from a written concept to reality. We opened Sagemont in September 1996 with 23 students in grades prekindergarten-3rd grade. In August 2015, Sagemont opened the school year with 815 students in grades prekindergarten-12th grade. In 1996 we had seven full-time employees. Currently, we have over 110. Our growth in an ultracompetitive environment is unprecedented. My story and our formula for success is why you should choose me as your consultant.
During the past 21 years, I have become an expert in many significant areas important to private school growth. I over saw the construction of a 120,000 square foot physical campus that includes three significant additions to the plant. Under my leadership, Sagemont developed one of the first 1-to-1 laptop programs in the United States with over 500 users from students in 5th-12th grade. Two years ago, tablets replaced the laptops. I have developed an individualized college counseling program that has enabled Sagemont students to be accepted to the best colleges and universities in the United States. The relationships that we have developed with colleges have paid off. In 2015, 100 colleges attended our annual college fair. During the past two decades, I have presided over two initial AdvancEd/SACS accreditation teams and three successful reaccreditation visits. Over the past decade, we developed a high school athletic program that has won five state championships and had over 35 students sign Division 1 scholarships. Most importantly, I have a thorough understanding about private school enrollment management and marketing.
In 2008, the board of my school gave me a very clear direction. They wanted me to come up with a plan to grow the school by 100 students in a four-year period. This type of enrollment growth is a significant challenge for any school head. The fact that the United States was about to enter a massive recession (the worst economy since the 1930’s) made this challenge close to impossible. We did it! Within four years we grew 100 students. How we accomplished this goal is why your school should hire me. I will share the processes and procedures that we used and adapt them to your unique school environment.
